2021 was another test for sanity for many of us, and when the external pressure turns out to be a little too much, we all turn to our home as our fortress. The interior design has never been as intimate as it is becoming now, when the home is not just a place you live, it became the place you function, and the design was forced to follow. No cookie-cutter solutions cut it anymore! To inspire you on your journey to your dream home, I give you the trends for 2022, and not just for kitchen, but for your entire home.
Lets start with colors.
The three main paint manufacturers are finally seeing eye to eye this year, with Benjamin Moore's October Mist, Sherwin Williams' Evergreen Fog and Berh's Breezeway all being shades of green. The beautiful green-silver shade of October Mist is light and inspiring, Evergreen Fog - a little moodier, but still calming and tranquil and Breezeway, the lightest and the most breezy color, one thing is certain - you can't go wrong with green.
Overall trajectory for the home design set in 2021 is carried out to 2022, with spaces becoming more functional, more livable and more unique to the owners. Probably the biggest universal trend for 2022 is biophilic design, where living space is filled with plants and greenery. This trend is not new, but it hasn't been as popular with residential spaces as it has with commercial spaces in the past. Whether you are willing to maintain a moss wall or have several potted plants, this trend is great for quality of live as well as the design. It's a part of "bring outside inside" agenda that started in 2020, and I'm happy the trend is on the rise.
The furniture is getting curvier and more inviting, with strict ultra-modern straight lines staying in the past. The comfort became a lot more important and curved, soft furniture provides just that. Curved shapes are easier to live with, more comfortable to use and offer a great opportunity for design: allowing fascinating play with textures and colors to take the front of the stage. This type of furniture provides more of a backdrop for your style, instead of having a distinct style of it's own.
When it comes to kitchens, there are several things that are slowly but gradually disappear: the grey cabinets are out, and it seems that grey as interior color is getting towards the end of it's swing. It's not going to disappear completely, but it's definitely not as hot as it used to be couple of years back.
Open shelves is another trends that is phasing out. With kitchens claiming back their original purpose, the space taken up by open shelves became needed for storage, and keeping the shelves organized became a little too much.
Open concept is being replaced with more strict space division. With entire families stuck at home for prolonged periods of time, open concept proved to be less livable.
With all said, the kitchens, stylistically speaking, are moving towards "living" style. Dinettes and nooks are on the rise, and those get soft seating surfaces and cozy, inviting designs. The lights are becoming more important, taking up the role of the accent in the room with bold designs and colors. The general rule for lights is to follow the shape of what's under: the round table gets a round light and rectangular table gets a line light. The same lights are going over the islands, which are still very popular. Islands are becoming more functional, with and without seating.
Cabinetry trends are very similar to past year, with wood being a main trend. It's being combined with accent of contrasting cabinetry colors to create a lighter feel, but the natural textures and materials are still dominant. The door design is moving towards more laconic, simpler styles, where the wood grain and natural colors take the focal point. Whether you combine wood with black, grey, white or green is the matter of personal preference, so don't shy away from colors. This will allow to create a truly unique space that is a reflection your individuality.
One thing that is important to remember is that no one knows your home better than you do. At the end of the day, it is your home, and it needs to be fitted to you and your family. So, get inspired and embrace the change, however big or small it may be.
