Boho kitchen – the lovely mess

A note on dream kitchen

Bohemian, or boho is more than a style, it’s a way of life. It’s creative, artistic, somewhat eclectic, open and charming way of life. It’s your unique way to embrace your vision and things you love, put it into one melting pot and wrap your world with it. So how would that work in the kitchen? If you are not sure what style of kitchen design would be perfect for you, boho might be the answer.

It might be very hard to pinpoint what the boho would (or should) look like, since it’s your unique style and way of decorating. There are general guidelines, rather than rules that you may follow to create your own beautiful and charming design. So let’s take it step by step.

Colors and textures

If, when thinking of boho, bright and bold colors come to mind, you are not wrong, but neither are you wright. Boho is not necessarily bright, it has a quiet and more settle side to it, it’s the vibe that counts. Even smallest of changes, like introducing macrame lamp shades and native design to the back of the island will turn otherwise pretty basic kitchen into something of a boho chic masterpiece. Keep it calm, not boring.

Want a little bit more color – trade saturation for moody hues, go dark and gorgeous, it will work, I promise! With all the accessories in different colors, you are set for success with insanely popular gemstone colors and muted, sophisticated hues.

That naturally brings us to the next point: the patterns and textures. If you like a particular pattern and color, but don’t think that they can co-exist, throw it together and call it boho, odds are – it will work. When you are working with a melting pot of design, inconceivable combinations are usually the ones that work best.

Layout

Because the style itself is so homey and artistic, try to include your kitchen into your living space, or vice versa. In any case, don’t separate it, even if it’s just a breakfast bar overhanging into your living room – make sure your eye can float from one room to the other.

Embrace the old

Dig into your attic, garage, basement, or where ever you keep all those knick-knacks, souvenirs and decorative pieces you ran out of space for. It’s their time to shine! I’m pretty sure that can be considered environmental, it’s reusing, right? Vases, pots, old pans, pottery, bottles, utensils, containers – everything goes! Put those on any horizontal surface you can spare, more the better! If you love it – it belongs.

Mixing and matching might be tricky in any conventional space might be difficult, but boho is all about that: different sizes, different shapes and different colors all add to the charm of the kitchen, to the unique and beautiful space that represents your exclusive self!

Keep it natural

Natural materials are the way to go with boho: jute rugs, wood accessories, marcame, and plants. A LOT of plants! You can have your own herb garden on the window, and always have fresh herbs handy! Ditch plastic jar, replacing them with pretty glass containers, have labels made for them and display them proudly! Wood counters are also welcome, and don’t be afraid of wood on your countertop, there are finishes that make wood safe for wet areas and have virtually no maintenance scheme. If wood counter is not quite in our budget – explore veneer or laminate options, those look just as good, but cost much less.

And, finally, the double tier drawer insert. Those are amazing! Combined with a drawer organizer, you double the storage capacity with this simple addition. Just slide it in out of the way when you need to reach the bottom tier.
